Case Study - Enterasys
Enterprise Plan of Record in Action at a Networking Company

Situation/Issues:

Enterasys Networks is a global provider of Secure Networks TM for enterprise customers. The company found that its key metrics such as order-to-deliver time and fill rate were not doing well against the benchmarks set by their customers. They also realized that under their current Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) process, each function extracted information from SAP and other sources and prepared its own plans employing spreadsheets. Reconciling the spreadsheets and information was a slow cumbersome process.

Over time, Enterasys had built a foundation of execution-oriented systems. While these systems contained data at all levels of the business needed for the planning process , they did not help deliver a better cross-functional plan. Enterasys also realized that they needed to formalize their planning process , and wanted their planning system to provide them with a process framework. The framework would also allow them to engage users across the entire company and facilitate change management.

System Selection:

As an SAP shop, Enterasys evaluated solutions from SAP and other well-known supply chain software providers. After a thorough evaluation process, Enterasys selected Steelwedge Software, an Enterprise Planning and Performance Management solution provider, to drive their Collaborative Forecasting & Demand Planning project. . Enterasys was impressed with the Steelwedge Enterprise Plan of Record paradigm. They also liked Steelwedge planning workflow capabilities. Rather than a complicated, operations-oriented user interface, Steelwedge utilizes familiar desktop applications like Microsoft Excel and Outlook to drive usage and adoption -- another factor that found favor with Enterasys.

Results

Enterasys was able to effectively implement its new optimized planning process. Detailed data once trapped in departmental systems is now transparently available at any point in time. Through event-driven alerts and scenario planning capabilities, Enterasys is able to proactively manage exceptions that occur within planning cycles and determine the optimal course of action after considering all aspects of the business, including the impacts on revenue and margin. The new planning software sits on top of the existing systems infrastructure at Enterasys and pulls together all the disparate data and translates it into a common Enterprise Plan of Record. The source systems that are aggregated and transformed include:

  • Cognos —Annual Operating Plan (AOP) and financial attributes including gross ASP, net ASP, standard cost, burdened cost and Unit margin
  • SAP —Historical shipments including direct and indirect (VARs and Distributors), Returns, Order Backlog across all Channels, Inventory, Product records and hierarchies, and the build plan
  • Agile —Product PLM status, End of Life date, Engineering release date and SAP status
  • Siebel —Configured and unconfigured sales pipeline opportunities
  • Other Systems – WW sales inventory and Distributor backlog and inventory

The Enterprise Plan of Record enables Enterasys to update plans on a monthly v. quarterly basis allowing them to be more in sync with the market conditions.
